Emlen Physick Estate:

Although Cape May’s beach is the most admired place, this seaside resort town has plenty more to offer than just stretches of sand. As you visit one of the oldest estates in Cape May, you may go back in time owing to some splendid Victorian-style architecture. The Emlen Physick estate was built in 1879 is acknowledged as an architectural marvel and is one of the best examples of Victorian stick-style architecture. The 18-room mansion will take you back in time as you explore it. Tours have various themes and there are free experiences. A visit to the Physick Estate gives a Victorian look as witnessed by its architecture, decorative arts, customs and the lives of specific Cape May family, the Physicks Emlen Physick Jr. his widowed mother, Frances Ralston and his maiden aunt Emilie Parmentier moved into their home when it was finished in 1879.

In 1876, 20 year old Emlen arrived in Cape May and bought 11 acres of property along Washington Street, where he constructed a carriage house and 18 room mansion. The house was designed by famous Victorian architect Frank Furness and considered avant garde for the time period. Emlen also bought two tenant farms and kept the livestock at the estate. While his grandfather, Dr. Philip Syng Physick, is well recognised for his contributions to improving surgical techniques and creating multiple instruments that are still used in operating rooms today, Dr. Physick himself never practised surgery after graduating from medical school. Dr. Physick led a completely active social life and embraced the life of a gentleman farmer.

 After Dr. Physick death in 1916, the estate went through various owners and fell into abandonment. A group of worried citizens created a Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts in 1970 and succeeded in getting the city of Cape May to get the property in 1973. Lately it is home to the MAC group. 

The estate is notorious as Cape May’s original haunted house with various paranormal inquiries happening on the property with the help of Cape May’s psychic medium Craig McManus.  McManus spotted some of the resident ghosts, one being Dr. Physick’s Aunt Emilie, who keeps a check on the place. Isabelle, Frances Ralston’s forces her presence as well. Carriage house is also haunted with an unidentified spirit. 

The carriage house has a tea room and a gift shop. Tea room has many themed events all through the year and is another amazing addition to the museum. The Carriage House Café and tearoom is daily open from noon to 4 p.m., April through October.

Estate tours offering $12 per adult and $8 per child. 45 minutes tours are led by docents. Tickets can be booked online. Veterans and military entry is free. Combination trolley tours of the historic district are also available for $25 for adults and $15 for children and military personnel.

Attend one of the estate’s many year-round programs including the Spring Celebration in April and May; Hops Festival in July; Craft Beer and Crab Festival in August; Harvest Festival in September; Victorian weekend in October; Sherlock Holmes Weekend in November and the Christmas and holiday weekend celebrations throughout December.

• Relish a traditional tea luncheon, afternoon tea or café at the carriage House on property.
• Visit the home’s genuine eight outbuildings and gardens.

The architecture:

A prime example of “Stick style” architecture is the Physick Mansion. Furness’s signature enormous exterior details, such as the vast upside-down corbelled chimneys, hooded ‘jerkin-head’ dormers and the huge stick-like brackets on the porch, set this building apart. There are various vintage furnishings on exhibit all over the house.

The Physick Estate was used as a location in the 1981 slasher film “the Prowler”, which was a special effects wizard Tom Savini’s second movie. The mansion also appeared in the season 1 episode 6 of Haunted Towns on Destianation America and was investigated by series paranormal team, Tennessee Wraith Chasers. The home is considered to be spooky by Dr. Emlen Physick and his family, as well as his mother.
